Chicks Hatching!

Our chicks in our fourth grade science class have hatched! Students were greeted Wednesday morning with the sweet sounds of  baby chicks chirping. Four chicks had hatched, and several more were pecking away at their shell, as they worked on making their entrance to this world. Check out the photos below of the chicks over the course of the past few days as they made their way from egg, to incubator, to brooder.

Mrs. Jensen's science classes have been studying chicken embryology. The Purdue Extension team even brought a variety of chicken breeds for a visit! Next week we will have a team of student experts ready to answer any of your questions about chickens, their life cycles, the hatching process, etc. Post your comment below before Wednesday May 13th at noon to get your questions answered by a student in Mrs. Jensen's class. We look forward to your questions! #bonairchicks

It is so interesting to see the chicks begin to crack the eggs and make their way out into the world. What did you learn, 4th grade?

Dear Fourth Graders,

Do different colored eggs produce different colored chicks?

Speaking of colors, do hens always lay the same color of eggs?

Thanks,

Mrs. Concus

Dear 4th Graders,

I think hatching eggs in class so interesting!! What a great experience for all of you. I am wondering if you had to spend extra time caring for the chicks outside of class time. I look forward to seeing you next year in class...bring all of your learning with you!

Sincerely,
Miss Oldaker

Dear Fourth Graders,

I really think that hatching baby chick sis VERY interesting. I still remember when we did that in my fourth grade. Did you know that female chicks are called pullets until they are 1 year old. At age 6 months, they begin to lay their own eggs. What things to you guys know about baby chicks.

Dear Mrs. Concus
it depends on the color of the ear lobe. Say if the color of the ear lobe is red then it will produce a brown egg.
thanks, caleigh

I learned that the chick eats the yolk. A hen does not lay different colored eggs.
They have a egg tooth that breaks the shell. They can live with out there mom because they are born to know how to take care of themselves. It is not hard to take care of them and were not naming them. Destiny Bradley
