Teachers Excited and Ready for New Year

What do teachers do over the summer? They prepare for the next school year! Our teachers at Bon Air are licensed educators who strive to improve their abilities and continually seek opportunities for ongoing career and professional developemt.

Over the summer our teaching staff met together with Petitt Park Elementary staff for PD in Pajamas. We met new teachers, collaborated on grade level curriculum, planned ideas for the upcoming school year,.....all while having a ton of fun!

A group of us from Kokomo Schools traveled this summer to Atlanta. Georgia, where we attended the Model Schools Conference. We heard from nationally known speakers and leaders in the education field and we built relationships with teachers from all over the country. Together our team focused on ways we can continue to engage our students throughout the school year. We came back to Indiana excited to push forward with many of our ideas!!

Teachers never stop learning!!!

Welcome Back Bon Air Families

We are excited and blessed to welcome 376 elementary students back into our building. You could feel the excitement as students unboarded busses, ran to meet their teacher, and high-fived old friends.

Bon Air has three new teachers this year. Ms. Armstrong and Ms. Huffman will be teaching first grade and Ms. Stickles will be teaching fourth grade ! We also brought our fifth grade classrooms back to the elementary side of the building so we are all together on one wing. You will notice some classrooms have changed locations so watch for the new building directories next time you visit.

We look forward to a successful year together.

Summer Reading Books

Hello Families!

We want our students to continue reading over the summer, even for just a few minutes each day. Each child received two free books of their choice before leaving for the summer. Each book was accompanied by a related game or activity. Please tweet us a picture of your child reading or completing their activity to @academy_ba or by emailing jhollingsworth@kokomo.k12.in.us.

Our first response came in this week from Clinton, a future fourth grader. Clinton read the book, Who Would Win? Lion vs. Tiger. This nonfiction book is filled with facts about both species physical and mental attributes. This book is part of the series, Who Would Win? by Jerry Pallota.

Clinton joined #teamlion with this tweet posted on Tuesday, "Clinton thinks the lion will win the battle because he has a thick patch of hair around his neck and the tiger doesn't."

Who do you think will win? #teamlion or #teamtiger?

Did your child receive this book too? Below are the directions for the activity. Join Clinton in the debate between who will win.....Lion or Tiger?

Preventing the Summer Slide!

Monday we sent off our students with the challenge to become SUMMER SUPER READERS to prevent the "summer slide!" What is the summer slide?  Studies have shown that students who do not read over the summer can lose three months or more of reading achievement. As they progress through grade levels, these losses become greater and students fall farther behind their classmates.

What are we doing to prevent this? Students chose two free books to take home with them over the summer. Each of those books came with an activity or game. We challenge all of our students to continue reading EVERYDAY over the summer. We also want to see you reading or completing your activities. Students who tweet a picture reading or completing an activity will receive a special prize next school year and have their picture hung up in the school! Thanks to everyone who has already sent their picture. :-)

Tweet us a pic of your child reading (#readingselfie) or completing an activity (hashtags listed on instructions) to @academy_ba.
(There was a typo on the instruction sheets. Please use the Twitter account above!)

Don't have Twitter? Email a photo to jhollingsworth@kokomo.k12.in.us.

We have had parents ask us other ways they can support their child in reading over the summer. Here are some ways we suggest!

  • Join the Summer Reading Program at the Kokomo Howard County Public Library. Kick off is Thursday June 4th from 6-8pm at the Downtown Branch.  Sign up any time throughout the summer for free access to books and prizes!! Website for Summer Reading Club

  • Have access to the Internet? Have your child get on their MyOn Reader account. MyOn Reader offers thousands of ebooks for readers prek-12th grade. All books can be read out loud to students! (username: firstname.lastname    password: Lastname (use a capital letter for the password). My On Website
  • Set aside time everyday to turn off electronics and read. Even 10-20 minutes a day makes a huge difference. Let kids read to younger siblings, you read to your child, let your child read to you, model reading yourself by picking up a book while they are reading!
  • Use reading in other ways! Cook together and read the recipe! Read about current events in the newspaper and talk about them together. Follow an appropriate blog or website about a topic that interests your child. Let them research things online related to their interest.
  • Visit the Hoosier Family of Readers page which includes a video and resources from Indiana Superintendent of Public Instruction Glenda Ritz! The Indiana State Department of Education has many free resources for families over the summer to prevent summer reading loss! Including free museum passes, access to online programs, and much more!!   Hoosier Family of Readers website
  • Don't forget about writing! Writing is important too, have your child keep a journal about everything they do this summer. (I kept my middle school diaries.....they are fantastic memories to read looking back!). Go see a movie together, write reviews and share them or just talk about it on your ride home! Conversations build literacy skills too!
Don't forget to watch our You Tube Video for Super Reader Inspiration!!!
Mrs. Smith and Mrs. Hollingsworth's Kick Off Video

Remember, a reader is not simply someone who can read; a reader is someone who does read. -Glenda Ritz
